The Oil Tank Whistle Explained
In 2018, the global demand for crude oil and liquid fuels was 100 million barrels per day.
If you’ve got an oil tank, you may have wondered about the whistling sound it makes when being filled.
This isn’t a sign there is a problem with the tank; quite the opposite.
Read on to learn more about the oil tank whistle and its installation.
What Is an Oil Tank Whistle?
An oil tank whistle is also known as a vent alarm.
It is a physical part that is located in the vent pipe above your oil tank. As your tank is filled, the oil tank vent whistle is designed to make a continuous whistling sound.
When the tank is nearly full, the sound will stop. This indicates that you should stop filling the tank, ensuring that it doesn’t overflow. It is a simple but effective way of ensuring that you don’t have any spills from your tank.
Why Is It Important to Have?
The most obvious reason for having one installed is that it stops you from overfilling your tank and potentially spilling flammable liquid over your tank and beyond. This, of course, could be highly dangerous.
On a more practical level, if you don’t have one, then oil companies will refuse to fill your tank. Safety codes restrict them from supplying you with oil unless you have a working one in place to ensure that the tank does not get overfilled. It means that if your oil tank whistle isn’t working, or you don’t have one installed at all, you won’t be able to put any oil into your tank.
What About Installation?
Installation depends on the type of tank you have as well as the type of vent. You should consult the documentation for your specific vent and tank to find out the correct method of installation.
If you don’t feel confident installing it yourself, you could speak to your oil supplier. Since they cannot sell you any oil without a correctly installed vent alarm, they may be willing to take the job off your hands.
The best solution, however, is to contact a reputable company that specializes in the installation of oil tanks. You can then be sure that the job will be done correctly and will meet any necessary regulations.
